Update from NSSBCU Regarding new Collective Agreement Status

August 1, 2023

Collective Agreement Update from the Nova Scotia School Board Council of Unions
We hope, despite the record-breaking heat and rain fall, that everyone is safe and enjoying their
summer. As we reach the midpoint of the summer, your bargaining team wanted to provide an
update.

Currently, we are working to prepare the now ratified collectives agreement for signing by all the
locals and the Employer. Once this takes place, the new collective agreement will officially come
into effect, covering April 1st, 2021-March 31st, 2024, except for Local 5047, which covers August
1st, 2020-March 31, 2024.

In anticipation of the signing, the process of harmonization across the province has already
begun, but it is still in the early stages. Once completed, all school support workers in the same
classifications within the NSSBCU, regardless of where they live or the school they work for, will
be paid the same.

Once the collective agreement is signed, the process of distributing retro pay will begin. The
Employer will have applied to the treasury for the funding, so this cannot happen before the
collective agreement is signed. You will receive another update once we have more information
regarding timelines of payment.

Your bargaining team is working tirelessly to complete this process and we appreciate your
continued support and patience.

Message from Local President Dwayne Sarty

Hello Local 4682 Membership.

We have, as you all know by now, reached a tentative agreement to vote on in the coming weeks for our new Contract. Unfortunately I can’t share any details of this tentative agreement yet, mainly so it doesn’t go public before you hear it first.

I truly want to thank the executive, the strike committee, picket captains and the rest of the membership for their support in reaching a tentative agreement. Furthermore, a huge thank you to Ryan Lutes, President of NSTU and all the teachers, staff, students and parents who also supported Cupe!
Our members have no idea how much pressure was put on the government and employers with the rallys, sign making, facebook shares ect….8 Locals with 5400 members were united! We were organized and ready to defend our strike mandate that was given by the members. We were ready! We all needed more and were successful in reaching a tentative agreement.
Voting will occur and a detailed explanation will occur, Sunday April 30, 2023 at 12:30pm at South Queens school and 3pm at Bayview school.
In Solidarity,
Dwayne

Tentative Agreement

At approx. 2:10AM on Wednesday April 19th 2023 after a long day/night of bargaining, NSSBCU and the Government reached a TENTATIVE AGREEMENT.

Thank you for all your hard work, stepping up to volunteer on the Strike Committee, Picket Captains and Phone Tree. Thank you for all the time you took to blast social media with the many posts and content your executive supplied.

Wednesday PINK DAYS, the RALLY and Picket Sign Party would not have been successful without you, our amazing members.

Keep wearing PINK everyday until a deal is finalized and signed off!

Stay tuned for an upcoming Special Meeting Memo. Once your executive has a date, you will be informed.

Rally In Bridgewater

On April 15th 2023 members along with the entire executive held a 2 hour rally in Bridgewater.

We were a sea of PINK, we were loud, we were proud and we received a lot of support.

Members held signs, flags, passed out flyers and talked to members of the public who stopped by to find out what our message was.

Our message has been sent. We were SO LOUD at the corner of Lahave/Old Bridge that a lady walked down from the hospital area of town to see what was going on!

Picket Sign Party

Even though this is a time of uncertainty, it is ok to have a little fun to relieve some stress.

Members put their creative hats on, sat down with markers and boards to create picket signs that we may need to use.

Thank you to all that came out, we accomplished a lot tonight.
